Paris Half Marathon!
01 Feb 2016 - 30 Mar 2016
Amrisha and Alick are delighted to announce their forthcoming event, Paris Half Marathon: Post Event Update3 April 2016, Amrisha PrasharWe did it! Alick and I managed the #SemiParis! It was a crisp sunny Sunday in the city that took us on a beautiful route starting in the east of Paris at the Chateau de Vincennes, crossing the Place de la Nation, Bastille, parts of the Seine and back East. Best part was Parisian life continued as we ran the 21km! A HUGE thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all who sponsored One Kind Act, we managed to raise just over 1.3K! Here's to #livingandgiving Event Details Alick and I (Amrisha) have decided to take on the challenge of running the streets of Paris! Sadly it won't be us doing pit-stops from one wine bar to the next as we gorge on delicious bread and brie, but an enduring 21km as we take on the Paris Half Marathon! Some have said that's exciting, adventurous or...that we're simply a bit mad. We'll take on all three! And we do so, knowing we can raise money to help those less fortunate than us which OKA as a charity fully supports. OKA aims to help change communities and lives of others globally who suffer as a result of poverty of health, nutrition and education and may have fallen through the net of the larger charities whilst also ensuring minimum overheads and costs. The charity is run by Shamit (my uncle), who was inspired by my late grandfather's charitable giving throughout his life and compassion for those less fortunate. They have supported some great causes. Find out more here: https://onekindact.org/charity. As the charity grows, their ability to help those severely disadvantaged will expand. OKA's passion and dedication through it's vision and team is why we'd love to raise money to help them.So...with our task in hand! Our training for the half marathon has involved a strict regime of cross training sessions, yoga classes and regular long runs come rain or shine (wish we had more of the latter.) Our diets have been restricted to little alcohol and our sweet indulgences pushed to the side...sob, sob. And with 5 weeks to go the intensity is increasing. However, we are very excited by this challenge and hope to raise as much as we can for OKA!We'd love your support in helping us get through this race and donating in any which way you can.The A team (Alick and Amrisha)About One Kind ActOne Kind Act Changes Communities and lives of others globally who suffer as a result of Poverty of Health, Nutrition and Education and may have Fallen Through The Net of the larger charities. OKA Launch Party 2016
06 Feb 2016
One Kind Act are delighted to announce their forthcoming event, OKA Launch Party 2016 Post Event Update7 February 2016OKA formally launched the charity with great pride and pleasure on Sat 6th Feb 2016. Almost 320 tickets were sold out within 24 hours of release, making it a night of eager anticipation. It was obvious on arrival that everyone had one thing in common - a desire to have fun.Colourful cocktails and mouth-watering canapes were abundantly enjoyed, as guests chatted and mingled whilst perusing OKA t-shirts for sale and guessing the weight of a massive 10.5kg OKA cake. Guests took advantage of the professional photographer and posed happily in all their glamour. Zee TV covered the event interviewing several supporters and trustees. Dinner was a veritable banquet, served at tables adorned with lavish flower arrangements. The formalities started with a short, slick video introducing a glimpse of OKA followed by an understated but powerfully emotive speech by founder Shamit Malhotra on how OKA came into existence. The legendary Mama Lynn of Light in Africa charity took to stage with hair-raising stories of witch doctors, demand for albinos' body parts, young children being tied to trees and being saved from the brink of death. She spoke of hope to shelter more such children in the new building OKA has helped complete. There was an enthralled, poignant silence as she spoke.Mark Ramprakash voiced his pride at being patron of a charity that is different in so many ways, not least because it endeavours for all money donated to go directly to the needy with no wasteful costs. He also wryly observed how he is often asked more about his dancing skills than cricket, leaving many women wondering why he hadn't offered a slinky salsa lesson instead of picking the winning raffle tickets! The evening continued to run smoothly, thanks to the MCs - young, handsome Karun Soni and charming, eloquent Amrisha Prashar. Brazilian dancers in exotic feathers and agile street dancers with attitude entertained the crowd between speeches. Drink and dancing, fun and frivolity were plentiful all night. The auction, with varied and highly covetable prizes, surpassed all expectations in terms of fun, hilarity and most importantly, money raised. Finally, an amusing light-hearted banter took place on stage between trustees, Ajay and Amit, about being "lean and mean" and the age old question of whether size is important! On a more serious note, they delighted and surprised the crowd by announcing that an outstanding amount of over £55,000 had been raised that night - which meant every pound of the £75 ticket price could and would be donated to charity. Ajay's assertion that OKA is a completely transparent charity was deeply appreciated by the audience. The general sentiment of many as they left was that the event was smoothly and tastefully crafted out and a feeling of a warm glow in their hearts for having helped make the world a kinder place. Many guests expressed a desire to become involved with the OKA movement. Suffice to say, the evening of the OKA launch was a resounding success. Post Event Comments TESTIMONIALSWhat an amazing event filled with so many emotions! The joy and happiness of such a well-organized event for such a great cause! The sadness and heart wrenching motions of hearing all the horrible, unimaginative things that children in Tanzania and many other countries go through! The admiration and sense of elation that there are people like Mama Lynn who dedicate their lives to helping others! The realisation if only everybody just did 1 kind act - what a difference we can collectively make.Hats off to all that made this evening amazing and such a success.Love ReetaA night to remember! Not only was the event brilliantly organised, it was immense fun. It certainly lived up to its ethos of raising money whilst having fun. The evening was so well organized and hearing from Mama Lynn really gave meaning to how much work is needed to causes that find it difficult to get a voice. One Kind Act can really help.Neelam ThapparFantastic evening with some really inspiring stories that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. Thanks for letting us be part of it so that we can all contribute in its future.Sumeet Chander"OKA is a special organization. By capturing the hearts of minds of friends and family, and giving them experiences which are super fun - they've found a way to raise money for grass root causes which otherwise would struggle to raise any money at all in Africa and India.I've been to two events now, and I've spent the whole time dancing, singing or with a wig on my head with new and old friends - and always coming away feeling like I've made a small positive difference to a big cause."AlickEvent Details One Kind Act are delighted to announce their forthcoming event, OKA Launch Party 2016SATURDAY | 06 | FEBRUARY | 2016HOLIDAY INN WEMBLEY | 6.15PM - 01.00AMEMPIRE SUITE, EMPIRE WAY, WEMBLEY, MIDDX, HA9 8DS3 COURSE DINNER / UNLIMITED DRINKS/ LIVE ENTERTAINMENT / MAMA LYNN / DJ RAJ K/ RAFFLE / AUCTIONTICKETS £75 PER PERSON / TABLES (10 PEOPLE) £750 EACH PLEASE NOTE THAT CURRENTLY TICKETS MAY ONLY BE PURCHASED AS A TABLE OF 10(BUYING TICKETS SEE BELOW)* PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR INFORMATION ON BUYING TABLES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BUYING TICKETSClick buy tickets opposite >> If you are not an existing supporter you will be prompted to sign up. It seeks to aid those charities in areas around the world which have evolved locally to give relief to the indigenous people in dire need of help. OKA was officially registered in January 2015, and its priority has been to put the basic structures in place, raise the awareness, attract sponsors, and of course, raise funds. To date, it has provided small grants for individual needs but now with gathering momentum of its awareness, OKA have identified and supported further new causes, Light in Africa in Tanzania and El Shaddai in Goa. At Light in Africa, English born, Mama Lynn runs orphanages for destitute children and has installed food camps and water tanks in remote areas where no such facilities have ever been available. In a similar vein, El Shaddai, rescues street children who otherwise have no future and provides them with shelter, food, schooling and aspirations to develop a better life for themselves. Therefore, with these causes and more currently in mind, OKA proposes to hold its Launch Party. The evening promises to be a fun, living and giving night. By simply turning up, laughing with friends over good food and wine and having a great night out, you will help support the lives of those in desperate need. It’s a win-win situation. Here's our story in pictures:
Sweets and Treats
01 Mar 2015 - 17 Dec 2015
Naina Chohdha is delighted to announce her forthcoming event, Sweets and Treats.Post Event UpdateDecember 2015, Naina Chohdha,After 7 months of regular shopping for flour, sugar, butter and eggs, over 100 cakes baked and desserts whipped up and delightfully consumed I was delighted to hand over a tidy sum of just over £2000 to oka. I am truly grateful to all those who supported me and especially many of my friends who made frequent purchases to support me. I look forward to future cake sales and coffee mornings to support this wonderful charity. Naina's Personal PleaOctober 2015Dear friends,As many of you already know, earlier this year I completed my trek to the Great Wall of China to raise as much money as I possibly can for children’s orphanages in India. My quest was a 7 day trek over steep and difficult terrain walking up to 7 hours a day and I had trained long and hard to become super fit to achieve this goal in my desire to help these children. For your part, I am so grateful to so many of you who have supported me with your generous donations and through buying my sweets and treats. I made in excess of a hundred cakes and treats and you will see on this page how much money has been raised through this. Below is a list of treats, which I am still personally willing to make, bake and supply straight to your doorstep, subject to being within reasonable distance to where I live. If you have any special favourites, I will try my best to please.Could you also share this with any family and friends who live within a reasonable distance from yourself and who would enjoy homemade baking or perhaps a dessert for a dinner party. Please friends, I would prefer to continue to work hard to raise this money. You will be supporting a very worthwhile cause. PLEASE, please support me on this continuing journey and let’s raise as much as possible to help the extensive numbers of young ones receive the care and nurturing they truly deserve! To place your Order please call me on 07703 599065 or email me on nainachohdha@hotmail.com and let me have your details so I can contact you. Thanks,NainaEvent DetailsNaina’a culinary expertise is boundless. Leena & Vishal Survival Of The Fittest
16 Aug 2015 - 16 Dec 2015
Leena and Vishaal are delighted to announce their forthcoming event, Leena and Vishaal Survival of The Fittest:Post Event Update22 Nov 2015, Leena NayyarThe big day dawned and given the time of year the weather was awful. It was windy, raining and so very cold. It was especially challenging during one of the obstacles which involved running through a large stream of freezing cold water for about 2km.We set off and I thought I was doing OK until I reached what was the lowest point of my day. I was stuck on one of the obstacles - jumping off this 3 storey building into a large foam pad. I have a massive fear of heights and it was just something I could not get myself to do. I wasted a lot of my time just trying to wriggle out of this obstacle but at one point the organisers realised the queues were building and decided to push me off. I landed safely on the padding but realised that it was not as difficult as I had made it out to be. I could have done it myself and I did not need someone to push me. It gave me an impetus to carry on but honestly the best part was when it was all over! The whole event was super challenging and even having a decent fitness and endurance level did not help much with the obstacles, but it felt great to have done it and completed it. I must train harder for next time! There was a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction and we both felt absolutely fantastic for having done it. The icing on the cake was the generous amount of money we raised for OKA and the warm feeling that the world was a better place as a result.Pre-event Update15 Nov 2015, Leena NayyarMy husband Vishaal and I have signed up for Men's Health Survival of the Fittest as it was something he has done for 3 years in a row. I decided to join in as I thought it would be a great challenge and we could raise money for OKA. I have never done anything even remotely similar to this! What we have signed up for is world's biggest urban obstacle course/race over 10K with at least 50 obstacles. With obstacles like "slippery wall", "angled wall", "army assault course" and "crouching handbag hidden hernia", we need every bit of courage and fortitude.Training is proving to be very difficult as we are also in the middle of a house move. We have done several runs outside and also some strength training work outs. We have focused on outdoor training , so we can be best prepared for the obstacles that we were going to face at the event.Event DetailsOKA CHARITY OBSTACLE COURSE RUN We are both participating in the world's biggest urban obstacle course/race over 10K with at least 50 obstacles. With obstacles like "slippery wall", "angled wall", "army assault course" and "crouching handbag hidden hernia", we will need every bit of support we can get. This is a mental and physical challenge that will be really very difficult in the cold and rain of London’s winter. Notwithstanding the fact that this will be a huge challenge to us, we are mindful that people all over the world face far tougher daily challenges and it is with this in mind that we would like to raise money for One Kind Act (OKA). We love this charity as it is run by volunteers who take no salary and they aim to make sure all donations go to the end cause with minimum overheads. One Kind Act aims to alleviate poverty and is always looking for causes that may have slipped through the net and are not always supported by the bigger charities. We are beyond excited to raise as much as we can for this as we know this is going to directly help improve lives. As we take pride in overcoming the obstacles ahead of us, we turn to our friends and family to please join us and share that feeling by donating generously to OKA. Please support this cause and help with whatever you can - a little bit from you could mean the world to someone else. Thank you for your support. Naina & Neena's Journey!
22 Feb 2015 - 29 Nov 2015
Naina and Neena are delighted to announce their forthcoming event, Naina & Neena’s Journey: Post Event Update25 October 2016We boarded our Emirates flight from Heathrow on the 3rd October 2015, finally arriving 13 hours later in to the bustling city of Beijing. After a group briefing, and a meet and greet with our 43 fellow trekkers it was straight to bed as we had a 6.30am wake-up call the next morning. We were soon on our way through Monday morning Beijing traffic for a 3 hour journey to the start of our half day trek, Huangyaguan. First major obstacle was a toilet stop Chinese style with no doors! After overcoming our inhibitions, we started our trek. We walked along a section which began at Taipingzhai and then returned along the Great Wall to Huangyaguan. We covered many steps of varying heights and widths. After a few shaky legs, it was time for lunch and three hour drive to our second night the Impression Inn. Day 2 was another early start with a 6.30am wake up call. After a basic breakfast we were soon on our way for a journey of an hour and a half to the start of our walk at Gubeikou. We were joined by a group of local ladies known as the ‘hello’ ladies. They soon became an asset helping us with the difficult parts of our walk. They had their motives. We went trekking along the beautiful and scenic Gubeikou wall. The views were picturesque and for the first time this is what we felt we had come to experience. We trekked along parts of the wall with shear drops on either side where a few people were struggling with vertigo. We climbed many steps to ascend and descend 20 watch towers. The weather was very warm at 27 degrees and by lunch time we were glad for a rest inside the coolness of one of the watchtowers. Parts of the wall were closed due to military control and so we had to descend the mountain on a meandering dirt track through woodland to rejoin the wall at tower 21. Some of the watch towers were very challenging with very narrow foot holes and steps to reach the next tower. At this point we were on the Jinshaling section of the wall which is very touristic and in complete contrast to the first part of our walk. After a long 9 hour trek, we were welcomed into an extremely basic hostel with very poor quality food and facilities. Fortunately we had bought our own supplies of homemade treats in case with lots of cups of tea. All in all it was a challenging day and we felt that our training had certainly paid off. We had the luxury of an extra hour in bed on Day 3, with an alarm call of 7:30am. Unfortunately it was not in a hostel that you would have spent an hour longer than needed! Breakfast was spam, white bread and eggs! The walk started with those less able being given the option of traveling on a cable car, whilst the rest of us started the walk in high spirits. The first lot of steps and inclines soon sorted the “men from the boys”. The incline and steps were nothing like we had experienced yesterday, with literally vertical inclines which were smooth slabs of concrete with no footholds. It was sheer will power and determination that got us to the top, only to look towards the next watchtower and saw exactly the same! The “hello ladies” were with us again and sweet as they were they wouldn’t let us go without buying their trinkets and Great Wall gifts. We stopped for lunch at the point where the wall has started to crumble. A few of the group carried onto the next two watch towers but the terrain was quite challenging. After lunch it was an hour walk off the wall towards our waiting coach, which was going to take us to our accommodation for night 4. Event Details Our Challenging Journey...Dear friends, We are keen walkers who walk regularly for physical and social benefits. We have completed several half Marathon and full marathon walks raising money for various charities over recent years. Trekking the Great Wall has been a passion each one of us has been very keen to participate in simply because being a natural wonder of the world the scenery will be breath-taking and the terrain challenging encouraging us to be further disciplined in our efforts to train harder and in exceeding our natural limitations. Our walk is planned for October 2015 and the trek will involve walking a distance of several miles for up to 8 hours a day for a week. Naina’s pledge. As well as being a personal challenge, we would like to raise awareness of the charity One Kind Act. Through sponsorship and donation, I am personally hoping to make a collection to put towards the plight of street children in India. Children are an emotive subject and very close to my heart and I believe that every child deserves to be loved and raised in a happy and secure environment. In my attempts to make a difference I was introduced to Matthew (through my yoga teacher) who himself was an orphan with an extremely tumultuous childhood. His life story was humbling and as a result of his own hardship he wanted that no other children should have to suffer like he did. Through sheer hard work, the kindness of others and humble volunteers he has established several orphanages in Goa. The organisation that raises the profile of this cause is www.childrescue.net It is my intention to visit as a volunteer in the future and to further this cause in whichever way I can. Neena’s Pledge. The Great Wall of China trek will be challenging both physically as well as mentally. Having come from a family that believes in helping others, I would like to give something back myself. If the money that is raised through pledges and donations makes a difference to even one person in this world, I will feel that my personal challenge is complete. I am supporting two charities; OKA and Mycenae Gravis, of which both causes are very close to my heart. Mycenae Gravis can affect any one of us at any time, it is an autoimmune condition that affects the nerves and muscles. Autoimmune conditions are caused by the body's immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue. I hope that you will be able to support both of us by giving a donation to enable us to help others less fortunate than ourselves. All these charities rely totally on the generous donations of people like yourselves.
