Probate – some basic information

  • Probate – Probate is a legal process that is sometimes required to validate a deceased person's will in order for their wishes to be carried out by an Executor named in the Will. The executor is the person responsible for administering the deceased person's estate, ensuring debts are paid and remaining assets are distributed.

  • Grant of Probate - A Grant of Probate (in England, Wales and Northern Ireland) or Confirmation (if the deceased lived in Scotland) is the document that gives the executor the legal authority to deal with the estate.

  • Help and Advice – Solicitors or probate specialists usually assist in applying for Probate as in some cases it can be complicated. Additional information is available from the Probate Registry Offices England & Wales.
